Artist Statement

In my portfolio you will see all of the creative pictures that I created this year. You will see the reason and the purpose of my pictures. You will see what the message is and how I was feeling when I made them. My portfolio is not quite finished but I’m satisfied with what I have on it and with what I made. What I liked most about digital photography was that I learned how to take professional pictures and how to use photo shop.
When I first started the year I had no idea how to use photo shop. I already knew how to take pictures and how to use a camera but, now that I took the class what I knew back then was really nothing and it really wasn’t as useful and exciting. This whole year I’ve been working with photo shop and with cameras and I’ve learned a lot off them. All the things I’ve learned this year are very useful and I think that maybe at some point in the future they’re going to come in handy. Throughout the year I think that I have been a lot more successful with my creativity.
I’ve always been creative but when I got into digital photography I noticed that being creative was a little different. I kind of had a hard time thinking of how to do my projects or how to organize them. But as the year went by I easily got used to it and it started to become easier and I would think of things really quick and get awesome ideas. In the future I could maybe learn how to use photo shop a lot better and almost be a pro at it. I could maybe be more creative with my projects and learn how to have better organization.
I’ve seen how other people work and how confident they are over their art work and that really inspired me. I saw unique artwork from different artist and that also helped a lot. I have really improved with my pictures. When I was at Carl Hayden the pictures we created were a lot different then what we make here. So when I moved here I kind of felt lost because I really didn’t know how to be creative with the pictures or what to make since everyone else’s work was really good I thought that maybe what I made wasn’t really that good and that it was more about me then being creative.
When I moved here I think I took a very big step to changing in what I did over there to what I make now. I personally think that how I do my work and what I do know is a lot more creative and really unique to everyone else’s. I have learned a lot this year and I’m very happy about that. I know that each year I will grow more and my knowledge will grow with me. The most important things that I think I learned this year were how to use photo shop and how to take really good pictures. I think that in the future these are the things that are going to come more in handy and that I’m going to use the most.

metaphor

A shy prairie dog peaking out its burrow hiding from the whole world. The reason I chose this metaphor was because it expresses the way I am. I am a very shy person who really doesn’t talk much and I try to hide my feelings from people most of the time. The reason I chose the prairie dog was because even though prairie dogs don’t hide from the world they hide from their predators. In my metaphor when I say “hiding from the whole world” I didn’t mean literally but that I’m shy to express my feelings and hide them instead of showing them. This metaphor really expresses what I feel, what I think, and how I really am.

I made a few mistakes in my picture. First of all I know I could have made it look more real. I could have added a little more to it. I could have also been a little more creative with it and organized it a little different.

shutter spead

We were taking pictures in the dark so we had to change the setting in our camera to take a perfect picture. We had to make it look like we were just taking a picture in a room full of light. In the rest of the pictures you can tell that the room was kind of dark but since the settings on our camera were changed the camera captured a lot more light than what there really was. In the second picture we were just waving our cellphone to make light graffiti and before the camera actually took the picture we moved out of the way to make ourselves look like we were ghost. It was pretty cool to mess around with the camera settings. Now I learned a little more of how my camera works and how I can make awesome affects without using any computer program but my camera.

flash

Flash is just a small amount of light added to a picture so that you can see anything that is under shadow.

A good time to use flash is when there is a lot of light and lets say you want to take a picture of a friend but her/his face doesn't show in the picture because it's covered by a shadow. You can just add fill in flash and when you take their picture this time you will actually see their face this time.

metering

What light meter does is that it meters a certain color/spot and whatever it meters it considers it as the midtone and whatever is brighter than that is going to be even brighter and whatever is darker than that color is going to be even darker.

In the first picture what I did was that I metered for the computer screen so when i took the picture all you can see is the screen. In the second picture I metered for her skin so you can see everything else but it's not really the color it's suppose to be.

Metering can help you in the future when you're in a really dark place and you want to take a picture of your friend or you, you can meter for your skin or your friends skin and even though it's dark you can still see yourself.

surreal

From the way that this picture is organized and the idea of it you can tell that this person sees life as a path to success. That no matter how many obstacles cross she can go past them. That she might struggle to do it but eventually she has to go through it. With her on top of the griffin you can tell that she feels like she can fly on top of everything without anything getting in her way. That she has a lot of confidence and that nothing can bring her down. Then the pencils are like faced towards her so she probably feels like something is just going towards her trying to bring her down but that she’s not going to let it. She probably feels like everything in life is just flying at her and going to hit her and knock her off all at once. But she feels as if there were a griffin helping her and that its going through everything with her.

hand tinting

In this picture i had to make everything in black and white and choose something that i wanted to leave in color. I chose my shirt, my eyes, and the brick wall. At first i had a hard time choosing what to leave in color but i put a lot of effort into it and tried to make it as good as possible.

poem

On this pic I had to add a poem that had to do with my picture. Since I had a huge smile on my face I thought that maybe I had to add a happy poem. The poem says "How true is it that if we are cheerful and content, all nature smiles, the air seems more balmy, the sky clearer, the earth has a brighter green, the flowers are more fragrant...and the sun, moon, and stars all appear more beautiful, and seem to rejoice with us."
